Le Grand Départ!

History now awaits a new golden generation including the likes of Michael Valgren, Søren Kragh Andersen, Mads Pedersen or Magnus Cort Nielsen riding in the wheel of Jakob Fuglsang and they could shine as soon as the early days of this 109th edition. If such is the case, this Grand Départ, the northernmost one in the history of the Tour de France could also become the craziest one."

"A Grand Départ became a grand wish. Ever since the Tour de France hit the road in San Sebastián in summer 1992, the authorities and elected representatives of the Basque Country have longed to host the Grande Boucle again. This burning desire, combined with what the region brings to the table, could not be ignored, and this fervent courtship deserved to get a new taste of the three days of the Grand Départ after such a long wait. We are therefore thrilled to return to these hospitable lands, which have continued to dispatch passionate orange armies to the Pyrenees and far beyond, flying the ikurrina on the roadsides to boost the morale of their riders. Halfway between the sky and the sea, Biscaye, Alava et Gipuzkoa, the three provinces that make up the autonomous community, are fertile ground for spectacular cycling. I have no doubt that the leaders and punchers, clashing on every single climb, buoyed by the enthusiasm of the crowds, will put on quite a show. A Grand Départ for a grand wish."

Le grand départ!

"July 2023 will be a momentous occasion for the Basque Country. Fans will turn out in force and pump up the festive atmosphere that Basque supporters are known for on the roads of the Tour de France. The colourful Basque tide that infuses legendary mountains with joy will sweep through our own climbs, coast, towns and villages. All the Basque institutions have embraced the challenge and are working as a team to seize the opportunity. For us, this is a dream come true. We understand how important this stage is for the Euskadi/Basque Country Strategy for Internationalisation, which aims to raise the profile of our country beyond our borders. Cycling is a long-standing tradition in the Basque Country. Our goal is to host a flawless Grand Départ to make our lands an even more attractive destination. Our enthusiasm and commitment fill us with a sense of purpose as we prepare to welcome the 110th edition of the Tour de France."

The course changes every year, but has always finished in Paris; since 1975 it has finished along the Champs-Élysées. The start of the course is known as the Grand Départ. Since the 1950s it has typically taken place in a different town each year, and since the 1970s it has been common to award the Grand Départ to cities outside France as a way of increasing international interest in the competition and the sport. The right to host the Grand Départ is now highly sought after, with cities bidding to host, and has been shown to increase economic activity as well as interest in cycling in the host area.[3][4][5]

Friday, July 1, is the day. During le Grand Départ in Copenhagen, Denmark, nearly 200 riders will compete for the first yellow jersey of the 2022 Tour de France over 13.2 km. Filippo Ganna, among others, will roll off the starting ramp in his very fastest configuration ever during the opening stage. This configuration includes not only a streamlined helmet and a special time trial bike, but also an extra aerodynamic custom time trial suit developed by the Belgian company Bioracer.

Bioracer, clothing partner of Team INEOS Grenadiers, worked in close contact with the riders, the INEOS Grenadiers performance team and partners over the past few months. In opposition to many cycling clothing manufacturers being forced to limit themselves to book only a few sessions in the wind tunnel, Bioracer has its own wind tunnel at its disposal. More than 300 hours of aerodynamic testing in 2022 provided the necessary data to develop this supersonic time trial suit.

The Tour de France is all about details. In order to respond perfectly to this, the riders are measured three times a year. In August, there is an intake for the clothing package, before the turn of the year, there is a check and after the spring classics we measure to make the final adjustments for the grand tours. From aero sock to race suit, measuring each rider for about 3.5 hours each year ensures that the more than 140(!) items in their Tour clothing package fit like a glove.

As a development partner, Bioracer is more than a traditional clothing supplier for Team INEOS Grenadiers. Innovation drive is the beating heart of the company. Every year, the Belgian cycling apparel manufacturer designs more than 12,000 designs for teams and groups of friends worldwide. They choose quality tested by pros, with a custom design of their choice.

Britain will bid to host the 2026 Tour de France Grand Départ, with stages expected to be in England, Scotland, and Wales and funding coming from the government to back the bid and cover organising costs.

News of the bid emerged as part of the upcoming budget announcement on Wednesday. Chancellor Rishi Sunak said he will allocate 30 million funding to prepare bids to hold the opening stages of the 2026 Tour de France and the 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup.

Le Grand Départ of the 2024 Tour de France takes place in Italy - in Florence to be precise. The first two stages are hilly before the fast men are likely to have it their way on the third day of action.

This year has been one of a kind! It the world of sports the COVID19 pandemic has set the World on hold including sports events. Writing at the end of July, we start to believe that the Grand Départ of the Tour de France is really going to take place at the new Tour date: 29th August 2020.
